Reducing training requirements through evolutionary based dimension reduction and subject transfer

چکیده
Training Brain Computer Interface (BCI) systems to understand the intention of a subject through Electroencephalogram (EEG) data currently requires multiple training sessions with a subject in order to develop the necessary expertise to distinguish signals for different tasks. Conventionally the task of training the subject is done by introducing a training and calibration stage during which some feedback is presented to the subject. This training session can take several hours which is not appropriate for on-line EEG-based BCI systems. An alternative approach is to use previous recording sessions of the same person or some other subjects that performed the same tasks (subject transfer) for training the classifiers. The main aim of this study is to generate a methodology that allows the use of data from other subjects while reducing the dimensions of the data. The study investigates several possibilities for reducing the necessary training and calibration period in subjects and the classifiers and addresses the impact of i) evolutionary subject transfer and ii) adapting previously trained methods (retraining) using other subjects data. Our results suggest reduction ∗Corresponding author Email address: [email protected];[email protected] (Adham Atyabi) Preprint submitted to Journal of LTEX Templates February 9, 2016 ar X iv :1 60 2. 02 23 7v 1 [ cs .N E ] 6 F eb 2 01 6 to 40% of target subject data is sufficient for training the classifier. Our results also indicate the superiority of the approaches that incorporated evolutionary subject transfer and highlights the feasibility of adapting a system trained on other subjects.

The Impact of PSO based Dimension Reduction in EEG study
High dimensionality nature of EEG data caused by the use of high number of electrodes and long periods of task time is one of the drawbacks in EEG study. Evolutionary based approaches are alternative methodologies to conventional dimension reduction methods with the advantage of not requiring the entire recording sessions for operation. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is an Evolutionary metho...
متن کاملInducing Partially-Defined Instances with Evolutionary Algorithms
This paper addresses the issue of reducing the storage requirements on Instance-Based Learning algorithms. Algorithms proposed by other researches use heuristics to prune instances of the training set or modify the instances themselves to achieve a reduced set of instances. Our work presents an alternative way. We propose to induce a reduced set of partially-defined instances with Evolutionary ...

متن کاملAppraisal of the evolutionary-based methodologies in generation of artificial earthquake time histories
Through the last three decades different seismological and engineering approaches for the generation of artificial earthquakes have been proposed. Selection of an appropriate method for the generation of applicable artificial earthquake accelerograms (AEAs) has been a challenging subject in the time history analysis of the structures in the case of the absence of sufficient recorded accelerogra...
